The withdrawal/failure rates on PGCE primary courses appear lower, perhaps because mature students tend to achieve better results in higher education than students straight from school (Nye, 1996) but there remain substantial differences between male and female ITE students. There is a variety of possible explanations for this which warrant further exploration. Smedley and Pepperell (1996) have studied male student perceptions of a BA with a QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) course but comparisons between undergraduate and post graduate male ITE student experiences have yet to be fully researched. Some male students may feel intimidated by a predominantly female peer group but this would not explain differences between undergraduate and post graduate withdrawal/failure rates. Females clearly dominate both types of primary ITE routes. It is, however, possible that post graduate ITE students, being older and more mature, have a firmer commitment to their chosen career in primary teaching and have already had their academic ability thoroughly tested through their undergraduate studies. It is the perceptions of male BEd students, both mature and standard age entry, that need to be analysed. However, rather than male recruitment ‘distinctiveness’, the TTA might wish to consider retention and success rates as an important starting point in understanding and then perhaps redressing the gender imbalance in primary teaching in England in Wales.
